Affiliate programs come in many varieties with different rules and compensation plans. They all share the same basic idea. The sponsor will pay you for directing traffic to their web site. You will put ads on your web site with links to the sponsor’s web site. Some programs will pay you for each click through to their site. Other sites will compensate you based on any purchases that traffic from your site generates.

Obviously, you will need to have a web site. It no longer requires a lot of technical know how to maintain an internet site. Today there are companies who host and maintain a web site for a very small fee. They will provide an administrative page where you can update the site yourself. You do not need an IT department. It’s really quite easy these days.

Every industry has companies with affiliate programs. Whether you are selling music, videos, books, tools, actually just about anything, have marketing programs that you can join. The one factor that sponsors are looking for though is a common demographic. For instance, if you have an American Civil War web site, it is unlikely that an music web site that markets rap music is going to be interested in a relationship with you. But if you have a skate boarding web site, a t-shirt web site would be very interested in a relationship since you share a common demographic.

When you establish an affiliate marketing relationship you will make a legal agreement with the sponsor. Read the terms of your program carefully and make sure you understand them. Do not enter into the agreement if you do not feel comfortable with it. Your sponsor will give you HTML snippets which you will put on your web page. There are businesses who will help you coordinate and optimize your affiliate programs. It might be a good idea to get some help like this if you feel that you lack the internet technical experience.

One thing to watch out for when you are working from home is that it is easy to goof off. There are many distractions like TV, the internet, or even socializing with friends. It is sometimes too easy to find excuses not to work when you do not have a boss breathing down your neck. To avoid this, create a regular work schedule for yourself and stick to it. Treat it just like a normal job. Set up a work area that is organized and away from distractions.

To save a lot of hassle at tax time, invest in some accounting software. Keeping good business records is actually a good investment because many of your expenses will be tax deductible. You will even be able to deduct the part of your home that you use for your business. Find yourself a good accountant.

Getting Started As An Affiliate

To make money as an affiliate, all you really need to do is build a list, build relationships, and sell stuff. Sounds simple, right?

Of course, there are minor details, like building a website and driving traffic. But if you concentrate on these three things, you will be successful.

Let’s talk about conversions for a minute, because that’s really the most critical piece of the affiliate marketing puzzle.

Conversion for an affiliate marketer is when a visitor buys the product you recommend.

Three factors count most for conversion:

1. The number of visitors you send to an affiliate product sales page

2. The number of visitors who buy on that sales page

3. The commission amount you get

Let’s do the simple math. If you send 100 visitors to a sales page that converts at 3%, you’ll make three sales. If your commission is $20, that means $60 in total commissions for your three sales. Dividing total commissions by total visitors gives you your profit per visitor, or 60 cents in this example.

But those factors aren’t necessarily constant. Changing them can make a big difference in your income.

If you send 80 visitors to a sales page that converts at 5% and pays you $20 in commission, you make four sales and $1 per visitor. Fewer visitors, translates into more money, because the conversion rate is higher. And that $1 per visitor profit is a great target to shoot for.

But most sales letters don’t convert at 5% without some pre-selling. If your prospect is already convinced that she wants to buy, then the conversion rate for the same salesletter that normally converts at 3% could jump to 5%, 8%, 10% or even higher.

If you build a relationship with people and earn their trust, they are more likely to act on your recommendations. Think about it…

If a friend recommends a movie to you, how likely are you to watch it?

If a friend recommends a certain camera, how likely are you to at least research the exact make and model he purchased?

The bottom line is…if you can get $1 per visitor for any product, then you’re doing well. Any more than that is just gravy.

1. Using unique web pages to promote each separate product you are marketing. Do not lump all of it together just to save some money on web hosting. It is best to have a site focusing on each and every product and nothing more.

Also include testimonials from users who have already tried the product. Be sure that these customers are more than willing to allow you to use their names and photos on the site of the specific product you are marketing.

You can also write articles highlighting the uses of the product and include them on the website as an additional page. Make the pages attractive compelling and include calls to act on the information. Each headline should attract the readers to try and read more, even contact you. Highlight your special points. This will help your readers to learn what the page is about and will want to find out more.

2. Offer free reports to your readers. If possible position them at the very top side of your page so it they simply cannot be missed. Try to create autoresponder messages that will be mailed to those who input their personal information into your sign up box. According to research, a sale is closed usually on the seventh contact with a prospect.

Only two things can possibly happen with the web page alone: closed sale or the prospect leaving the page and never return again. By placing useful information into their inboxes at certain specified period, you will remind them of the product they thought they want later and will find out that the sale is closed. Be sure that the content is directed toward specific reasons to buy the product. Do not make it sound like a sales pitch.

Focus on important points like how your product can make life and things easier and more enjoyable. Include compelling subject lines in the email. As much as possible, avoid using the word “free” because there are still older spam filters that dumps those kind of contents into the junk before even anyone reading them first. Convince those who signed up for your free reports that they will be missing something big if they do not avail of your products and services.

3. Get the kind of traffic that is targeted to your product. Just think, if the person who visited your website has no interest whatsoever in what you are offering, they will be among those who move on and never come back. Write articles for publication in e-zines and e-reports. This way you can locate publications that is focusing on your target customers and what you have put up might just grab their interest.

Try to write a minimum of 2 articles per week, with at least 300-600 words in length. By continuously writing and maintaining these articles you can generate as many as 100 targeted readers to your site in a day.
Always remember that only 1 out of 100 people are likely to buy your product or get your services. If you can generate as much as 1,000 targeted hits for your website in a day, that means you can make 10 sales based on the average statistic.

The tactics given above does not really sound very difficult to do, if you think about it. It just requires a little time and an action plan on your part.
